Why Storytelling?

Connect Authentically with Your Audiences

Storytelling helps you overcome the biggest hurdle most organizational leaders face: jargon.

Every organization has its jargon — acronyms, cliches like “low hanging fruit” and “at the end of the day”, and euphemisms like “users”, “donors”, “prospects” and “leads”.

Jargon doesn’t use flowery verbiage. It is powerful and efficient. But it’s not very evocative.

And it’s definitely not emotional.

To create a sense of alignment that people can believe in, you need to paint an emotional vision that they can see, smell and feel. You need to strike the right balance between the professional and the personal. You need to speak clearly and authentically to overcome jargon. And you need to integrate a touch of showmanship into your leadership communication style, to give your messages just the right touch of flair.

the simple and powerful way to connect with anyone

Crossing the divide between the professional and the personal is the key to becoming a great leadership storyteller. This is no trivial journey. It takes practice, dedication, vulnerability — and a lot of failure. As you learn to be a great storyteller, you will fail often as you gradually develop your unique leadership voice.

That’s why it’s so important to practice storytelling in a safe and creative space. A space where you and your team can come together to laugh, support one another and truly learn.

There, you’l learn what you probably already knew: you have been telling stories your whole life. Storytelling is a muscle you already have that simply needs strengthening.

In this workshop, you’ll learn a ”workout routine” that you can continually use to improve your storytelling abilities long after the workshop is done.

How This Leadership Storytelling Workshop Works

Unlike any other leadership training

1. Get your hands dirty in a story you care about

Everybody’s story is different. After a brief overview of our unique Transformational Storytelling Process — a “greatest hits” of business strategy, behavioural science, psychology design thinking, narrative storytelling and more, packaged into a logical, easy-to-follow structure that can be applied to any form of organizational communication — you’ll immediately dive into one story you think is worth telling. By the end of the day, you’ll have taken that story and transformed it into something ready to share.

2. Break your story apart to find the real story underneath

Stepping outside of our own story is the best way to make it connect with someone else. In the first half of this workshop, you’ll use a handful of creative, outside the box exercises to see your story from a new perspective. Some of those exercises are borrowed from the world’s greatest creative thinkers. Some of them… well, honestly, some of them are borrowed from Burning Man. All of them will help you develop a perspective and hone the power of your leadership voice.

3. Rebuild your story into a prototype that you can test

Storytelling is an approach to communicating, not a box that you check. To get better at it, you need to break it into component parts and chart out clear, iterative steps. In the second half of the workshop, you’ll take what you’ve created and immediately form it into a “prototype” — a beta version that you can test with trusted people. By asking the right questions, you’ll get the kind of truly useful feedback that you’ll be able to put into immediate practice, breaking old habits and making you a better communicator in the process.

The workshop is ideal for

Senior managers, leaders and strategists who are leading transformation, conveying visionary value propositions and humanizing complex data. Anyone who needs to tell the big picture story and use it connect more meaningfully with teams, employees and professional audiences.

Questions & Answers

What are the logistics? Can you do this workshop in my space?

Yes, this workshop can be delivered in person by Jordan Bower, anywhere in the world. All you need is an open, creative space to bring your team together. (If you don’t have one, we’ll find one for you.)

Workshops run a full day. No, there are no half day versions. The minimum size is 8 people. The maximum size is 35 people, though the best size is between 18-24, to keep things intimate.

Oh, and by the way: no cell phones during the workshop.

Really? No cell phones? What if I need to keep track of important work?

We firmly believe that participants learn much more when phones are kept off. However, we’ll give you a break every 90 minutes or so, if you need to check in. (If you’ve got an important call or message to send, of course, you can always leave the room to take care of things.)

How do I know it will work? What if I’m already a great storyteller?

Storytelling is just like any other kind of exercise — it takes the right approach and plenty of practice to do it well. Rather than coming in and trying to teach you everything in just one day, we teach you the same creative process that human beings have been using for more than 35,000 years.

The great thing about our process is that it works for all different levels — from people who have never told stories to seasoned professional speakers. It is guaranteed to make a meaningful difference in the way you communicate.

How much a difference depends on how much effort you’re willing to put into it.
